'40' Exhibition 2018

Our '40' exhibition was held at the Old Hall, Cowbridge from 5th - 29th June. (am only on the 29th June).

It was held to celebrate the guild's 40th Anniversary and to show case 40 years of weaving, spinning, dyeing threads yarn and fibre! Some photos of the amazing work being shown at the exhibition are on our facebook page...@GlamorganGuildWSD.

About the exhibition:

For some of us it's the natural fibre from plants or from animals; for some it's the history, the culture, the techniques; for some it's about meeting others who love to make, or its the fun of learning new skills and extending knowledge and understanding.

Whatever our inspiration, we all choose to work with yarn and fibre incorporating techniques and ancient traditional skills that have existed long before us.

Over the Guilds lifetime, members have created stories and made connections that all tie back to threads, yarn and fibre.

This exhibition intends to illustrate the importance of the preservation and education of our ancient making traditions. With pieces woven by new weavers (beginning their journey), experienced artists, students, teachers, spinners, dyers, felters, the list goes on...we begin to see how the threads of this story are interwoven over generations, hopefully leaving the viewer inspired and curious about this unique form of making. Creating handmade items from the basic raw materials.

The making of cloth is one of humanity’s oldest activities, to this day it still relies on converting fibre into yarn and then into fabric.

The four steps are:

  • ·      Collect and clean the fibre or wool
  • ·      Card and spin into threads
  • ·      Weave or manipulate the threads into cloth
  • ·      Cut and sew into desired item
The Exhibition is being held at the Cowbridge Community College, Old Hall, 50A High Street, Cowbridge CF71 7AH which is near the Cowbridge Physic Garden.
